Ingredients

Sausage Gravy Ingredients
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (450g, mild or spicy)
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk cold or room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper adjust to preference
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Optional: for extra heat

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown 1 pound of breakfast sausage. Break it apart as it cooks for about 7-8 minutes until no pink remains and the sausage is evenly crumbled.
  2. Sprinkle 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour evenly over the cooked sausage. Stir well to coat the meat and fat, and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  3. While stirring constantly, slowly pour in 4 cups of whole milk, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. This helps to incorporate all of the flavors into a smooth sauce.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer for 5-8 minutes, stirring frequently until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. If the gravy becomes too thick, add a little more milk.
  5. Season the gravy with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. For a gentle heat, stir in the optional 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, and adjust seasoning to taste.
