Ingredients

  • 2 cans refrigerated cinnamon rolls (12-13 oz each; 8 rolls per can)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted (to grease the dish)
  • 4 medium apples peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter for apple filling
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt optional, for salted caramel

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Large skillet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Rolling Pin

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter.
  2. Open the 2 cans of refrigerated cinnamon rolls and set aside the icing packets. Flatten each roll using your hands or a rolling pin, then arrange half of them in the bottom of the greased dish, pressing to form a complete layer.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the diced apples, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples start to soften.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 2 tablespoons water. Stir the slurry into the apple mixture along with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Continue cooking for another minute until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let cool a bit.
  5. For the cream layer, beat 8 oz of softened cream cheese with 1/3 cup powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip 1/2 cup heavy cream until stiff peaks form, then gently fold it into the cream cheese mixture.
  6. Assemble the lasagna by spreading the cream cheese mixture evenly over the first layer of cinnamon rolls. Top with the caramel apple filling, then arrange the remaining flattened cinnamon rolls on top.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown. Once cooled slightly, drizzle the reserved icing packets and 1/2 cup caramel sauce over the dessert, adding 1/4 teaspoon sea salt to the caramel if desired.
  8. Serve warm, optionally accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or even a side of crisp bacon for an unexpected sweet-savory twist.

Notes

This recipe is versatile and allows for creative substitutions; for instance, mascarpone can replace cream cheese for a richer flavor, or Greek yogurt can be used to lighten the cream layer for a slightly healthier variant. You can prepare parts of this dessert ahead of time by assembling the layers a day in advance and baking them fresh when ready to serve. For an extra indulgent treat, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream, and consider a drizzle of extra caramel sauce for added decadence.
