Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and set it aside on paper towels, leaving about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the skillet.
- Add the ground beef and diced onion to the skillet. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened, about 6-8 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Mix in the ketchup, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Then, add the cooked bacon back into the skillet and stir well to combine.
- Reduce the heat to low and gently stir in the condensed cheddar cheese soup and sour cream until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
- Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top, arrange the frozen tater tots to cover the mixture, then sprinkle the remaining cheese over the tots.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly and the tater tots have turned a golden brown. Garnish with sliced green onions, if desired.
Notes
This Bacon Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole is both indulgent and versatile. You can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, or use black beans and corn to create a vegetarian version. If you don't have condensed cheddar cheese soup on hand, a combination of cream cheese and milk makes an excellent alternative. This dish also makes a great make-ahead meal for busy weeknights or gatherings.
