Ingredients

  • 2 large Apples Honeycrisp or Granny Smith recommended
  • 1/2 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. Prepare the apples by washing them; if desired, peel for a softer texture. Cut the apples into fry-like sticks and pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels.
  2. Set up a three-station coating assembly line. In the first bowl, add 1/2 cup all-purpose flour. In the second bowl, whisk together 1 egg with 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth. In the third bowl, combine 1 cup of panko breadcrumbs with 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
  3. Dredge each apple stick first in the flour, then dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it evenly in the breadcrumb mixture. Make sure each piece is well covered for a crispy exterior.
  4. Lightly spray the coated apple sticks with nonstick cooking spray. Place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket, working in batches if necessary.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F and cook the apple fries for 7-9 minutes. Shake the basket gently halfway through the cooking time until they turn a beautiful golden brown and become crisp.
  6. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce such as warm caramel sauce, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a dollop of Greek yogurt drizzled with honey for an extra touch of indulgence.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use almond or coconut flour and substitute regular panko with gluten-free panko. Vegans can replace the egg with a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water). Feel free to experiment with additional spices such as nutmeg, cardamom, or pumpkin pie spice to add extra warmth. This recipe is best enjoyed fresh, though leftovers can be reheated in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore some crispiness.
